In support of the Child Mind Institute’s #WeThriveInside campaign, Misty Copeland got candid about how she’s taking care of her own mental health in addition to sharing simple tips you can implement daily to take care of yours. “I think it’s really important to try and keep yourself surrounded by people who mean something to you,” Copeland said in the video. She also recommends having daily affirmations for yourself and reminding yourself that you are important.
“As a classical ballet dancer, as a performer, as someone who has experienced having a lot of pressure — not only from outside sources but from myself — something that’s been extremely important for me and that’s really kept me in a healthy state of mind was journaling,” she said. “I think also just to do things that bring you fulfillment whether or not they’re extremely physical or you’re following anyone else’s standards or guidelines,” she said.
Copeland also recommends discovering and doing things that make you happy — no matter how big or small. For her, that’s journaling, cooking, and listening to music. Your list may not be exactly the same as Copeland’s, and there’s nothing wrong with that. Just do things that you enjoy and that make you happy! “I think at least doing one of those things daily will keep you in a very positive and healthy state of mind, especially in times when we’re so removed from one another.”
