A High School Dance Team Recreated Barbie’s Viral “Dance the Night” Routine

Every Barbie hit the dance floor at the Los Osos High School pep rally in Southern California on Aug. 11. Following the international success of Greta Gerwig’s “Barbie” movie, the high school dance team delivered an impressive routine set to Dua Lipa’s “Dance the Night” from the film’s soundtrack.

The video, choreographed by Rachel Muego, begins with the classic “Hi, Ken! Hi, Barbie!” voiceover from Margot Robbie and the rest of the “Barbie” cast. To kick off the routine, the school staff — including Principal Eric Cypher, according to the description of the YouTube video — hit the dance floor in their most fitting Barbie gear, striking poses inspired by the beloved doll. Within seconds, at least 50 students joined the faculty. Not missing a beat, the dancers beautifully executed the exact dance moves Robbie and her costars pulled off during her unforgettable “Do you ever think about dying?” scene at the beginning of the film.

Between synchronized claps, the students threw their hands in the air and shimmied across the basketball court, with most dancers dressed in pink and white à la Barbara Millicent Roberts. Coupled with the color-changing lights, the entire routine evoked a ’70s disco dance party vibe that even Allan wouldn’t want to miss. Toward the end of the choreography, Lipa’s song faded out, only to be replaced by “Barbie World (With Aqua)” by Nicki Minaj and Ice Spice. The dance team quickly switched to more hip-hop-inspired moves before running across the courts in alternating rows to show off their school spirit and close out the routine.

In May, the same dance team went viral when they recreated Rihanna’s Super Bowl halftime performance for their Spring Dance Show. With the entire school year to look forward to, we can’t wait to see what the talented young dancers do next.
