Honey-Mustard Ham

Honey mustard is delicious on ham! This simple spiral ham glaze, with only 3 ingredients, balances the sweet and tangy flavors and complements the taste of the ham. It’s so juicy you won’t have to worry about the ham drying out and is perfect for Easter, Christmas, or any holiday where you need to feed a crowd. I
also have these more traditional ham recipe, Honey-Baked Ham and Apricot-Rum Glazed Spiral Ham. And if you want to make it in the crock pot, try my Slow Cooker Ham with Apricot-Dijon Glaze.

I tried a few ham cooking methods to get this recipe just right, but I was having trouble with the ham drying out and the honey mustard flavor not coming through. This method, however, worked great! My hams were all 6 to 6 1/2 pounds. I think for an 8-pound ham, you could add another tablespoon of mustard and dark brown sugar for even more flavor.

Honey-Mustard Ham Ingredients

Ingredients

This 3-ingredient ham glaze is easy to whip up with pantry staples.

  • Dijon Mustard’s tangy flavor complements the sweetness of the honey and sugar.
  • Honey thickens the glaze, helps it stick to the ham, and provides sweetness.
  • Dark Brown Sugar adds a little crunch and caramelizes when heated.
  • Ham: Buy a 6- to 8-pound spiral, bone-in ham that’s fully cooked.

How to Make a Ham

  1. Prep: Preheat the oven to 325°F and position the rack at the bottom of the oven. Place the ham cut-side down in a large baking dish and cover it tightly with foil.
  2. How Long to Bake a Cooked Ham: Bake the ham until it’s 135°F at its thickest part. It should take about 15 minutes per pound, about 1 ½ to 2 hours total. Since the spiral ham is fully cooked, we’re only reheating it but don’t want to dry it out.
  3. Honey-Mustard Ham Glaze: Mix the mustard, honey, and brown sugar in a small bowl.
  4. Glaze the Ham: Once the ham is ready, increase the temperature to 400°F. Remove the ham from the oven, and brush the glaze all over it.
  5. Continue roasting the ham for 15 to 20 minutes until the glaze has browned and is bubbling. Let it rest for 10 to 15 minutes before serving.

What to Serve with Baked Ham

This honey-mustard ham recipe is excellent for Easter or anytime during the spring. Here are some serving suggestions:

Storage

  • How long are spiral ham leftovers good for? Ham will keep in the refrigerator for up to 5 days, but you can also freeze it in airtight containers or zip-locked bags for three months.
  • Easy Leftover Ham Recipes: Leftover ham is great for many recipes, like fried rice, omelets, quiche, and beans. And don’t throw away the ham bone! Save it and make my Leftover Ham Bone Soup.

Spiral Ham FAQs

What is the best way to cook a precooked ham?

A precooked ham is fine to eat straight out of the refrigerator. However, if you want to glaze and heat it, here are some tips:
1. Cover the ham to prevent it from drying out.
2. Bake it at a low temperature. I recommend 325°F.
3. Cook it for the correct amount of time. Warming it takes about 15 minutes per pound, so do the math! For a 6-pound ham, that’s about 90 minutes.

Can someone with celiac eat ham?

Sometimes, pre-glazed hams will contain gluten. However, unglazed hams are naturally gluten-free and safe for people with celiac disease to eat. My honey- mustard glaze recipe doesn’t contain gluten.
