The Dry Challenge

This guest post is written by Hilary Sheinbaum, author of the THE DRY CHALLENGE and her latest one GOING DRY: A Workbook.

Hilary sent me her books a few years ago and I love using them as a resource when I want to do a dry challenge. Taking a break from drinking (even for just a month!) has extreme benefits and can be incredibly life-changing. From losing weight, to saving money, to sleeping better at night, the overall health and mental gains of going dry for a month are endless. H0pe you enjoy her mocktail and buy her book if this sounds like something that will help you!

It Started With a Bet

Hi I’m Hilary Sheinbaum, I started participating in Dry January in 2017. Truth be told, it was inspired by a silly bet that I made with a guy friend on New Year’s Eve. The premise? Both of us would attempt a Dry Jan — no wine, beer, spirits, cocktails, shots or anything else with ABV — for 31 days. The person who sipped anything alcoholic in that time frame would lose and therefore have to buy the winner dinner anywhere in New York City. No restaurant or dollar amount was off the table. If we both lost, no fancy dinner. If we both won: we would split the bill. (Did I mention I’m a journalist and my beat at the time was booze? My friend thought he was a shoe-in for a win!)

In the end, I ended up winning the bet (and a free dinner, courtesy of my friend Al) but in the long run: I gained so much more than a meal. In a mere 31 days, I learned how alcohol was negatively impacting my sleep, mood and anxiety. As corny as it sounds: it changed the way I drink… and my career, among other things.

I can’t say that it stuck longer than 31 days that *first* year… but now Dry January has become a tradition that I look forward to at the start of every calendar year. I drink a lot less than I used to outside of January, and often I extend my dry-periods into February, March, and beyond. Sober October is another month I really enjoy as well.

My years-long journey inspired my first book THE DRY CHALLENGE and my latest one GOING DRY: A Workbook, which has 70 prompts, exercises, and activities to encourage reflection and serve as a judgment-free guide. Interactive pages provide insights and offer support for readers embarking on their personal dry journeys.

How To Get Started Going Dry

Whether you’re looking to do for a full Dry Jan or a damp one, I highly suggest trying nonalcoholic wines, beers and spirits, and NA cocktails (aka mocktails) along the way. To get started on your journey, there’s a site called BetterRhodes.com that has tons of NA options to try, and even an app called BetterWithout that can help you locate restaurants and bars that have NA menus when you are out and about. There are also step-by-step apps like Reframe, which have helped hundreds of thousands of people reduce their alcohol consumption, and offer support.

Lastly, it’s important to note that Dry Januarys and dry month challenges are not recovery programs or for people seeking recovery options. If you are truly struggling to give up alcohol, please speak to a doctor.

With all of that said: on the heels of the Eras tour ending (yes, I’m so sad about it!), my favorite mocktail is what I call a French ’89 (a spin on the French75 that also gives a nod to Taylor Swift’s birth year, since she crushed this past year and told TIME Magazine that she was not drinking while on tour!)
